Fall is that great time of year when warm sweaters come out of storage,
the kids are back in school, and Thanksgiving is just a heartbeat away.
Here are some great ideas for making your own delightful jewelry charms
to give away as gifts or to brighten up your own wardrobe. They are all
fun and easy to make.
Fall Leaf Earrings
Great for any fall outfit, beautiful enameled fall leaf charm earrings
can be personalized by adding beads. You’ll need one pair of French
earring hooks, two 1-inch eye pins, beads of your choice, two fall leaf
charms, a pair of round-nose pliers, and a pair of flat-nosed pliers.
Step 1: Thread the beads onto one of the eye pins. Save 1/4" of pin at
the top to make a loop. Use the flat-nosed pliers to bend the wire at a
90-degree angle.
Step 2: Use the round-nose pliers to grip the end of the bent eye pin.
Roll the eye pin around one side of itself to form an eye.
Step 3: Repeat the above steps for the other eye pin.
Step 4: Use the flat-nosed pliers to open one end of the eye pin. Attach
the leaf charm by holding the eye pin so that you can see the circle.
Push the opening away from you and hook the charm on. Last, pull the end
back. This will keep the circle round, in contrast to opening the eye
pin by unrolling the eye. Repeat this step with the other eye pin.
Step 5: Use the same method as in Step 4 and attach the French hooks to
each of the eye pins.
Tips: You can squeeze French hooks into a tighter U so that they don’t
fall out of your ears. You can also use small clear rubber earring
backs.
Thanksgiving Day Charm Bracelet
This is a fun and flirty bracelet. Since it’s an easy and quick project,
it makes a good family activity. You’ll need translucent stretchy cord,
a pilgrim boy charm and a pilgrim girl charm, a large pumpkin charm, a
turkey charm, a large leaf charm, a corn husk charm, a pair of
needle-nose pliers, assorted beads, and 6mm jump rings.
Step 1: Cut the stretchy cord to the length you desire and knot one end
of the cord. Add your beads.
Step 2: Tie the two ends of the cord together and then pull it firm. If
desired, you can add a touch of super glue to make sure it’s secure.
Step 3: Use needle-nose pliers to open the jump rings. Attach the
charms, spacing them evenly around the bracelet. For opening or closing
a small number of rings, you can use a pair of pliers to hold the ring
and use a finger to push it open or closed. Open and close the ring by
twisting it apart, not by pulling it open or pushing it closed. Although
you don’t have to use 6mm jump rings, these larger jump rings are easier
to use than small standard-sized jump rings.
Pumpkin Charm Zipper Pull
This is a great zipper pull. It’s quick to make and will jazz up almost
any apparel, such as a sweatshirt. You can also use it on handbags,
backpacks, coin purses, and totes. It can double as a key ring and is
especially great for that spare set of keys. You can make one with
initial letter charms as a small gift for someone special or you can
make a team spirit mascot charm for your child’s gym bag.
The materials you’ll need are one lanyard hook, a 1-inch eye pin, a
large pumpkin charm, some assorted beads, a pair of round-nose pliers,
and a pair of needle-nose pliers.
Step 1: Add your beads to the eye pin, leaving 1/4 inch of space at the
top of the eye pin. Bend the wire 90 degrees with the needle-nose pliers
and grab the end of the wire with the round-nosed pliers. Wrap the wire
around one side to create another eye.
Step 2: First opening then closing the eye with pliers, attach the
pumpkin charm. Open the eye pin the same way you would open a jump ring,
as described above, by twisting it apart.
Step 3: Last, attach the lanyard hook onto the other end of the eye pin.
Now you can jazz it up!
